Roman Numerals

Website on Roman Numerals

You can write Roman numerals using only these seven letters as building blocks

I    =    1                 V     =    5                 X     =    10                 L     =    50                 C     =    100                 D     =    500                 M     =    1,000

You will need: pencil and paper

1.  Practice making different Roman numerals by combining the numbers above

2.  To write a big number, add on each part of the number, starting the highest.   For example:  1,776 is MDCCLXXVI  ---M(1,000), DCC (500+100+100), LXX(50+10+10),

    VI (5+1)

3.  Try writing down the year of your birth

To count from 1-20 in roman numerals, add or subtract letters like this:

I =1,     II=1+1,     III=1+1+1,      IV=5-1,     V=5,      VI=5+1,     VII=5+1+1,      VIII=5+1+1+1,     IX=10-1,      X=10

XI=10+1    XII=10+1+1    XIII=10+1+1+1     XIV=10+(5-1)    XV=10+5    XVI=10+5+1     XVII=10+5+1+1    XVIII=10+5+1+1+1     XIX=10+(10-1)    XX=10+10+

Count by tens like this:

X=10    XX=10+10    XXX=10+10+10     XL=50-10    L=50    LX=50+10     LXX=50+10+10    LXXX=50+10+10+10     XC=100-10    C=100
